Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Stud
Nowadays,  students  are  living  and  learning  in  an  environment  which  is  quite different from the last century with so much abundant learning resources both online and  offline  as  well  as  advanced  equipment  and  teaching  techniques.  The  greatly developed  learning  condition  will  certainly  greatly  be  affected  the  learning  style  of most learners, including college students.
Many  students,  from  primary  school  to  college,  having  no  ideas  about  learning styles.  Therefore,  most  of  them  are  not  so  sure  what  type  of  learner  they  should belong to. If the students can figure out what types of learners they are at an early age, their life could have been different. The way of learning should be more effective and time-saving.
With the widely spread and popularization of Internet and multimedia technology, the endless emergence of educational concepts and teaching methods is increasingly updated,  students'  psychological  development  and  learning  characteristics  and methods  have  also  undergone  rapid  changes.  Driven  by  the  concept  of "individualized"  education  and  "learner-centered"  teaching,  more  and  more  scholars and  educators  have  come  to  realize  the  individual  differences  of  learners  and  the leading role of learners in the learning process. As a result, there are more and more differences in the ways and means of studying individual learners. Learning Style has again become the focus.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
In  the  context  of  the  information  age,  the  rapid  development  of  the  mobile Internet, with the widespread of Internet plus and Wi-Fi, smartphones, tablet personal computers, WeChat Official Account, micro-blogs, Mooc have gained their popularity among  the  youth  and  most  of  the  students.  They  are  powerful  new  learning  and communication  tools  and  platforms.  The  rapid  development  of  Internet  provides  a new direction for the development of education by enhancing the reform of it. In the new  era,  the  learning  style,  learning  efficiency  and  learning  mode  of  learners  of  all ages  will  be  affected.  Especially  the  college  students,  who  tend  to  be  mature  both psychologically and physiologically. They are very plastic in many aspects. Therefore, it is very necessary to grasp and understand the changes in college students' learning styles, preferences, and  characteristics. Only in this way, their self-awareness can be well enhanced, good learning styles and habits can be cultivated as well as face up to their learning strengths and weaknesses. Nowadays, many pieces of researches focus on English teaching have gradually shifted from "how to teach" to "how to learn". The purpose of this study is to study how the learning styles of vocational college students have changed in the new Internet era under the guidance of learning style theory. This fully  reflects  the  need  to  respect  students'  differences  in  teaching.  Just  as  the  old Chinese proverb goes “teaching students in accordance with their aptitude”. The study aims  to  help  the  students  in  GX  Eco-Engineering  Vocational  and  Technical  College fully  understand  their  learning  style,  adopted  appropriate  learning  strategies,  and positively provide some references for the teaching and learning in higher vocational colleges.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Definition, Classification of Learning Styles
Generally,  the  concept  of  Learning  Style  (LS)  was  considered  first  brought forward  by  Herbert  Thelen  in  1954.  It  is  widely  acknowledged  that  students  obtain knowledge in different ways ( Dweck and Berniecrat, 1983; diSessa, 1985; Jonassen and  Grbowski,  1993;  Gardner,  1999;  Lynn,  2009).[15]Western  studies  on  learning styles can be divided into three stages: early studies (mid-1950s-late 1960s) focused on  the  characteristics  of  learning  styles  from  different  learning  styles,  learning strategies and cognitive styles; recent studies (mid-1970s-1990s) showed a clear trend from the whole to the differentiation, focusing on the use of disciplines. The method of  learning  experiment  studies  all  kinds  of  factors  in  learning  style  to  reveal  their influence  on  learning  style.  Modern  learning  style  research  (after  the  late  1990s) focuses on applying the research results of learning style to teaching practice to guide teachers'  teaching  and  students'  learning.  In  the  West,  there  have  been  dozens  of theories and models of learning styles, many of  which have been directly  applied to teaching practice.
Several  definitions  have  been  offered  for  learning  styles.  Ellis(2001)  defines learning  style  as  the  consistent  pattern  of  behavior  and  performance  by  which  an individual  approaches  educational  experiences.  According  to  Vester(2005),  learning style is the more or less consistent way in which a person perceives, conceptualizes, organizes,  and  recalls  information.[10]  Keefe(1979),  an  American  scholar,  believes that  learning  style  is  a  relatively  stable  learning  pattern  which  is  related  to  learners' psychological characteristics, personal emotions, and cognitive styles, what it reflects is  how  learners  feel  the  information,  interact  with  the  environment  and  then  react accordingly.

2.2 The Definition and Characteristics of Internet Plus
Internet  Plus  is  the  integration  of  the  internet  and  traditional  industries  through online  platforms  and  IT;  it  is  expected  to  push  forward  the  Chinese  economy  by reforming innovation and economic structure.  In general, the emerging  Internet  Plus in China has the following characteristics (which you can find by searching Internet+ at http://baike.baidu.com). The Characteristics of Internet Plus are as follows:
Trans-boundary  integration.  Internet  plus  involves  economic  subjects  from different  fields;  thus,  trans-boundary  integration  of  the  Internet  and  traditional industries is the most important feature.
Innovation  drives  development.  China's  extensive  resource-driven  growth  model has  long  been  unsustainable.  We  must  shift  to  the  right  path  of  innovation-driven development.  This  is  the  nature  of  the  Internet,  the  so-called  Internet  thinking  to change, self-revolution, but also more able to give play to the power of innovation.
Structure  reformation.  The  information  revolution,  globalization  and  Internet have  already  broken  the  original  social  structure,  economic  structure,  geographical structure and cultural structure. Power, rules of procedure and discourse are constantly changing.  Internet  +  social  governance,  virtual  social  governance  will  be  very different.

Chapter 5 Main Findings and Suggestions

5.1 Main Findings Here are some major findings of the questionnaire.
1)The overall situation LS of vocational college students in the study are concluded as follows: Kinesthetic learning style is the most favored perceptual learning style by the 99  participants  with  a  mean  of  18.37.  The  2nd  preferred  style  is  auditory  learning  style with  a  mean  of  17.91.  Visual  learning  style  rank  3rd  with  a  mean  of  17.75.  The  4th preferred style is group  LS with a mean of 17.54. The 5th preferred  LS is individual LS with a mean of 16.62. Dependent learning style is the least favored learning style with a mean of 16.49 among college students who take part in the survey.
2)  Through  interviews  and  analysis  of  interviewee’  data,  it  is  found  that  students with multiple learning styles have achieved better academic performance; while students with single learning style have lower or relatively poorer academic performance. Among the  students  tested,  those  who  prefer  kinesthetic  learning  style  also  have  higher  scores than those who don’t like kinesthetic learning style.

Chapter 6 Conclusion

6.1 Summary
1)The  overall  college  students’  learning  style  can  be  concluded  as  follows: Among  the  tested  college  students  in  Guangxi  Eco-engineering  Vocational  and Technical College,  college  students'  most  favorite  learning  style  is  kinesthetic, auditory and visual LS. Group LS are also welcomed among the tested students. Two of the Students' least favorite learning style are individual learning and dependent LS. Teachers  should  adjust  their  teaching  styles  and  apply  corresponding  teaching methods  according  to  the  current  learning  styles  that  existed  among  the  college students.  The  data  show  that  students  in  higher  vocational  colleges  are  not  good  at kinesthetic  learning  and  group  learning.  Therefore,  teachers  should  encourage students  to  cultivate  those  learning  styles  that  are  good  for  English  learning.  As  for the  students,  they  should  realize  the  weakness  in  kinesthetic  learning  and  group learning, and then try their best to broaden their ways of English learning.
2)Students  with  multiple  learning  styles  have  achieved  better  academic performance; while students with single learning style have lower or relatively poorer academic  performance.  Among  the  students  tested,  those  who  prefer  kinesthetic learning style also have higher scores than those who don’t like kinesthetic learning style.  As for the teachers, teacher’s’ teaching styles should compensate the students’ LS.  Moreover,  teachers  should  supervise  individual  learning  under  Internet  & Multi-media environment. In addition, teachers are supposed to encourage students to develop multiply LS. As for the students, students should hold an unyielding view that there is no absolute good or bad PLS. Under the Internet & Multi-media environment, students should have the awareness of to develop and make full use of their visual and auditory LS. Students’ PLS should combine the training objective of their majors with their personal strengths. What’s more, students are expected to develop those LS that can be beneficial to their studies which they are not good at, such as  kinesthetic and group LS.
