Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
At present, with the deepening of the awareness of sustainable development andenvironmental protection, many enterprises have gradually developed from the stageof pursuing growth and strength to that of pursuing long-term success, and havebegun to seek“evergreen foundation”,“sustainable operation”and“sustainabledevelopment”.Enterprises do not exist in isolation, nor can they develop in isolation. Therefore,in order to achieve“sustainable operation”,enterprises should not onlydeal well with internal relations, but also with external relations, including therelationship with consumers, countries, and society, especially with the naturalenvironment.Only in this way can enterprises be recognized and supported by thesociety and grow stronger. From a certain perspective, the process of“sustainableoperation”of enterprises is also the process of enterprises continuously fulfillingsocial responsibilities and achieving sustainable development with their own ability. In order to promote sustainable development, governments, businesses, andorganizations around the world have begun to develop sustainability reports(SR),which are an important means to reflect the process of sustainable development, evaluate sustainable development achievements, and promote sustainabledevelopment.
Corporate image is one of the key factors that determine the survival anddevelopment of enterprises in the competition, and thus the construction of corporateimage is the field that enterprises need to innovate constantly.Today, corporateimage construction has shown a trend of diversification and cross-dimensionaldevelopment.It is no longer applicable to measure the success of corporate imagebuilding solely through traditional dimensions such as word-of-mouth and rate ofreturn.

1.2 Research Objectives
From the perspective of PDA and based on the Systemic Functional Grammar(SFL),this study compares and analyzes the corporate images constructed in CSSRCand CSSRA,and probes into the factors behind the differences. It should be notedthat this study examines the self-shaping process of corporate image, and thecorporate image in this study refers to the social consciousness conveyed by thecompany to fulfill its responsibility for sustainable development.Specifically, thefollowing three research objectives will be realized in this research.
Firstly, describe and compare the distribution of various lexical resources in theChinese and American corpus. This requires the use of corpus software to retrieveand count those resources that realize transitivity system, mood and modality systemand thematic system in CSSRC and CSSRA,and then compare the statistical resultsof the two corpora. The distribution characteristics of these lexical resources canprovide an objective data base for subsequent analysis.
Secondly, interpret the experiential, interpersonal, and textual meta-functionsreflected in the above systems, summarize the characteristics of the imageconstructed by Chinese and American energy enterprises, and compare their similarities and differences. This is a step towards the macro-discourse meaning fromthe micro-linguistic level.

Chapter Two Literature review
2.1 Previous Studies on Corporate Image
This section will provide a review of relevant research on corporate image.Firstly, this study explains the definition and importance of corporate image, andthen summarizes the research on corporate image in different disciplines.
2.1.1 Definition and Significance of Corporate Image
Corporate image refers to the overall impression of an enterprise established bypeople through various signs(Li,2009).Those signs generally concern productcharacteristics, marketing strategies, personnel styles,etc.(Zeng,2016).It is anexternal manifestation of corporate spirit and culture and the overall perception feltby the public in the process of contact and interaction with the enterprise.Corporateimage is usually divided into self-shaped image and other-shaped image, with thedifference lying in the subject that shapes the corporate image.Self-shaped image isthe corporate image constructed by the executives and employees inside theenterprise through signs such as language, pictures and or specific behaviors of theenterprise, while other-shaped image is that constructed by individuals or groupsoutside the enterprise through various signs(Hu,2020).

2.2 Previous Studies on Positive Discourse Analysis
Positive discourse analysis(PDA)is one of the important research paradigms indiscourse analysis. In this section, this study firstly introduces the definition anddevelopment history of PDA,and secondly review its different applications incurrent research.
2.2.1 Definition and Development of Positive Discourse Analysis
Since Martin put forward positive discourse analysis(PDA),many scholars athome and abroad have defined positive discourse analysis based on its motivation, purpose, corpus selection and analytical methods.Liao Xin(2009)believes that PDAis to coordinate the relationship between speakers and listeners, rather than simplypraising the discourse of the power class in the society. It unites both parties, cementsharmonious relationships, and promotes social harmony and order.Tang Qingye(2008)points out that the main theoretical source of PDA is Systemic FunctionalLinguistics, especially the appraisal theory, which aims to build a relaxed, conciliatory and co-existing human society.Basarati&Kazemian(2024)considerthat PDA seeks to give voice to the oppressed and minorities and reverberate thealternatives to make the world a better place.Hughes(2018)emphasizes in hisdefinition of PDA that PDA particularly stresses progressive-rather than oppressive-discourse,and in practice it is overwhelmingly focused on reconstructing resistance, not deconstructing oppression.

Chapter Five Results and Discussion
5.1 Contrast between Lexical Resources in CSSRC and CSSRA
In Halliday’s view, the three metafunctions of language are all semantic conceptsthat need to be reflected through specific semantic systems. Therefore,in this section, data collected from CSSRC and CSSRA will be used to compare the similarities anddifferences in various lexical resources, with the aim of identifying their linguisticfeatures. It mainly compares the distribution of three systems, namely,Transitivitysystem,Mood and Modality system, and Thematic system.
5.1.1 Contrast between Transitivity Resources in CSSRC and CSSRA
In order to explore how language in the chairman’s speech serves theconstruction of the company’s image,it is necessary to investigate the distribution ofparticipants, process types, and circumstances. Therefore,in this section, the datacollected from CSSRC and CSSRA will be used to describe and compare theproportion of various components in the Transitivity system that include participants, process, and circumstance. The presentation and analysis of data provide aquantitative basis for section 5.2.Table 5.1 below presents the overall distribution ofcomponents of the Transitive system.

Chapter Six Conclusion
6.1 Major Findings
This study integrates Functional Grammar with Positive Discourse Analysis toform a comprehensive analytical framework, and based on this framework, itanalyzes the chairman’s speech in the Sustainability Report of Chinese and Americanenergy enterprises.Firstly,it compares the distribution of transitivity resources, mood and modality resources and thematic resources in CSSRC and CSSRA,respectively. What follows is the analysis of similar and different kinds of corporateimages constructed through the use of the above resources. Finally, this studydiscusses the contextual factors that contribute to the different corporate imagesconstructed by Chinese and American energy enterprises.
With regard to the first research question, namely, the similarities anddifferences between the distribution of transitivity resources, mood and modalityresources and thematic resources in CSSRC and CSSRA.This study conductsstatistical analysis by using UAM Corpus Tool and chi-square test, and makes thefollowing summary.
From the perspective of similarity, firstly,in terms of the use of transitivityresources, material processes account for the highest proportion in CSSRC andCSSRA.Besides, the subtypes of mental processes are the cognition type, which isrequired by the characteristics of speech texts conveying concepts and objectiveinformation.Secondly,in terms of the use of mood and modality resources, theclauses in CSSRC and CSSRA are both declarative and tend to favor Readiness and Intensity. Finally,in terms of the distribution of textual resources, the distribution ofunmarked themes is similar in CSSRC and CSSRA,occupying the majority of thetheme types. In addition,Chinese and American energy enterprises also have similarusage of marked themes of Time and Manner.
