Chapter I Introduction

1.1 Brief Introduction to the Translation Task
The  original  material  was  taken  from  the  thesis  entitled  “Movement  Primitive Segmentation for Human Motion Modeling” by Michelle Karg, a professor teaching at the University of Waterloo in Canada. There is no Chinese translation of this article in China. The number and difficulty of the translation material is moderate, which accords with the requirements of translation practice.
This paper is about the segmentation of human motion primitives. It mainly proposes a  segmentation  framework  and  compares different  segmentation  algorithms.  This  paper reviews the substantial progress in the principles, techniques and segmentation methods of human  motion  primitives  worldwide,  as  well  as  the  application  prospects  and  potential research  directions  of  this field  in  the  future  intelligent  market,  looking  forward  to  the major scientific and technological challenges related to the segmentation of human motion primitives.
As the domestic research on this aspect is still immature, it is hoped that the domestic research can absorb and introduce foreign countries’ advanced technology, and adhere to independent  innovation,  learn  from  new  theories  and  new  methods  to  enhance China’s independent  innovation  ability.  At  present,  the  research  on  human  motion  primitive segmentation  has  been  applied  to motion  monitoring,  gesture  recognition, human-computer interaction and robot imitation learning. It is believed that it will become a wind vane of society in the future.

1.2 Features of the Scientific English
The  original  text  belongs  to  the  technical  English  text.  Specialized  nouns,  passive voices, and complex no subject clauses further prove their strict wording. The source text involves interdisciplinary knowledge such as physics and computers, including both terms and abbreviations. So in the preparation process, the translator looked up a large number of  parallel  materials  related to  the  original  text and  looked  up  the  terminology  from  the dictionary.  Fortunately,  although  some  professional  vocabulary  and  sentences  in  the original  text  are  difficult  to  understand,  there  are  some  explanations  that  can  help translators  understand  these  specialized vocabulary  and  sentences,  which  reduce  the difficulty of translation.

Chapter II Translation Process

2.1 Pre-translation Analysis
After  confirming  the  translated  text,  the  translator  first  read  the  full  text,  then understood the main content of the paper, straightened out the main framework of the text, and  researched  the  text-related  materials  and  read  a  large  number  of  parallel texts,  and looked up some professional vocabulary and new words that appeared in the text, and thus the translator have a general understanding of the whole article.
2.1.1 Vocabulary Analysis
The material is a scientific text, so one of the biggest features of the text is that there are a lot of technical terms in the original text. Such as “Primitive Segmentation”, “Motion segmentation”,  “Physical  boundaries”,  “Manual  Segment  Data”, “Public  Databases”and etc. It is necessary to look up the relevant field dictionary such as English-Chinese science and  technology dictionary  or  read  related  fields  literature  and  parallel  literature  to determine its specific translation.
2.1.2 Voice analysis
In  terms  of  voice,  science  and  technology  English  tends  to  use  passive  voice,  and more  often  uses  the  present  tense  of verbs  to  express  the  natural  phenomena,  processes and so on, such as:

2.2 During-translation
In the process of translation, the faithfulness of translation not only stays in the states of complete equivalent output, the acceptability of the target readers should also be taken into consideration, so that the translation will be more readable and acceptable.
Nominalization  and  passive  sentences  are  widely  used  in  science  and  technology English  articles,  which  are  quite  different from  those  in  Chinese,  because  there  are  few nominalizations  or  passive  sentences  used  in  Chinese  expressions.  If  the  text was translated according to the original structure, there will be some defects in the translation, such as the absence of sentence subject, inconsistency statement and so on. Therefore, in the  process  of  translation,  the  words  order  should  be  properly  adjusted  to make it  more consistent  with  the  habits  of  Chinese  readers.  Such  a  change  is  a  more  complete translation of the original text. On the basis of expressing the original text clearly, it also satisfies the needs of the readers, and at the same time makes the principle of faithfulness more realistic.

Chapter IV Case Analysis Based on Tytler’s Theory

4.1 Translation Based on First Principle
4.1.1 Vocabulary Translation
In  the  Three  principles  of  Translation,  Tytler  firstly  emphasize  that  “A  translation should give a complete transcript of the ideas of the original work. (Tytler 1791:10). It is conveying  an  important  rule  for  a  good  translator,  which  indicates  that  the  translation work should be as the same accurate as original work and that is also the top principle of translation of scientific English, especially in vocabulary translation.
Science and technology vocabulary is often the central word or key word in scientific and technical articles. After mastering the characteristics of scientific English vocabulary, we need to think, select and translate the related vocabulary in a appropriate manner. Only by correctly mastering the translation skills of vocabulary can the translation of the entire article be more accurate and rigorous. So first of all, we need to handle the meaning of words flexibly.
In some cases, the interpretation of individual words in the dictionary is not always appropriate  for  scientific  articles.  At  this  time,  we should  adopt  flexible  translation methods  to  find  a  more  appropriate  meaning  for  this  word  in  this  scientific  article.  For example:
