Give full attention to the illustrations in textbooks, so that they can beclosely combined with the text, in order to achieve the goal of cultivating students'good emotions and interests, improving the reading competence and creating theirthinking ability.

From the perspective of research significance, up to now, there have been a lot ofresearches on textbook illustrations in China, but most of them are about Chinese andother subjects. There are relatively few researches on textbook illustrations in primaryschool English. This study attempts to make up for the insufficient value of this research. The suggestions put forward at the end of the study can make teachers andstudents pay attention to the illustrations in the teaching materials, so that therealization of the illustrations in the teaching materials should have practicalsignificance to improve the teaching effect of English reading in primary schools. TheEnglish Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education (2011) emphasizes in thegoal of secondary language skills that students should be able to read simple storieseasily with the help of pictures. Students can describe and tell the simple stories withthe prompts of pictures. Meanwhile, they can write simple sentences according to theprompts of pictures. PEP Textbooks contain a large number of implicit humanities.We should be good at mining humanistic information, so as to serve the classroom.However, in the actual teaching situation, many teachers rely on the use of multimediaequipment and supporting teaching tools, which results in the neglect of textbookillustrations and low teaching efficiency.

Chapter II Literature Review


2.1 Definitions of Key Terms

The definitions of illustrations and illustration teaching are described below.

2.1.1 Definition of Illustration

Illustration also known as ‘illustration’, is a term derived from Latin ‘illustraio’,which means to illuminate. That is to say, illustration can make text ideas clearer. Itprovides a wealth of supporting information for the content. According to the positionand function of pictures in books and periodicals, Cihai (2009) defines ‘illustration’ asa picture inserted in books and periodicals. Some pictures are printed in the middle ofthe text, some use the way of inset that on the content to supplement or appreciate thecontent of the text. The explanation of illustration in Longman Dictionary ofContemporary Advanced English points out that a picture in especially one that helpsone understands the text. Although there are some differences in their interpretations,they have something in common that ‘illustrations’ are attached drawings made toexplain, illustrate or narrate specific text through specific visual images. Thetransformation of words into images enhances the visual, intuitive and readability ofwords, and also adds artistic atmosphere to books.

In this study, illustrations are defined as a small part of illustrations, namelytextbook illustrations. The so-called textbook illustration refers to the content ofexpressing and transferring knowledge information by pictures, photos, charts andicons with the characteristics of intuitive and vivid.
