Chapter FourInterpersonal Cohesive Harmony

As we have mentioned in above chapters, ECH is in need of enrichment from theperspective of interpersonal meaning of texts. Context of texts is the occasion of textsand provides the cultural and situational background of Cohesive Harmony andcoherent texts from interpersonal perspective. Mood categories and the speech functionsare beneficial to the development of Cohesive Harmony by enriching the expression ofoffer, statement, command and question in actual texts. Intonation contributes to theexpression of speech functions. Rising tone of declaratives which expresses the speechfunction of statement expresses questions. Modality, which covers the contents ofmodalization and modality, subjectivity, orientation, metaphor of modality, provides away of measuring the textual coherence by expressing judgments. Evaluation concernsthe speaker or the writer’s attitude and judgment expressed in texts consciously orunconsciously. Context, mood and speech function, intonation, modality and evaluationact as major interpersonal elements which influence the measurement of coherence oftexts and enrich the Theory of Cohesive Harmony for the reason that they highlight theobservance of phenomena of cohesive harmony of texts.

4.1 Context and Cohesive Harmony

Language is a unique and useful way of communication for human beings and it isa necessary tool for effective and efficient exchange of goods-&-services or information.And a text, spoken or written, is a way of understanding language (Halliday & Hasan,1985). Moreover, text is a semantic unit and the study on it is considered to be closelyassociated with its context since context is the occasion of communication. And thus,the element of context has its research value if the relation between Cohesive Harmonyand coherence of a text is the focus of the discussion.
