Chapter Ⅰ Introduction

1.1 Research Background

Conflict talk refers to the conflict between the utterance of one party and the other party, which is manifested in that the communicative party opposes the others’ words and behaviors, or the two sides hold different opinions on someone or something, resulting in a discourse conflict (Zhao Yingling, 2004). Living in social groups, people have to communicate and cooperate  with  others,  and  language  is  the  most  important  tool  in  interpersonal communication. People  use language to  express  their feelings, transmit  information  and exchange ideas. It can be said that the normal functioning of society can not do without language. However, in daily life, it is inevitable that people have different opinions on some issues, which may lead  to  conflict  talks and even lead to  conflict  behaviors, resulting  in serious consequences. Due to its general influence on interpersonal relations, scholars started to  study  conflict  talk  from  many  different  disciplines,  such  as  sociology,  anthropology, linguistics  and  so  on.  Grimshaw  (1990)  first  proposed  the  term  “conflict  talk”  in  his proceedings, and then it was widely used in the study of verbal conflict.

With the development of social economy and the improvement of living standards, people are paying much attention to health and Medical services. In recent years, there have been more and more TV series reflecting the relationship between doctors and patients with the background of hospitals, whose broadcasting has aroused wide attention from all walks of life. The display of medical contradictions in the play fully presents the serious problems between doctors and patients, arousing social attention about it. At the same time, it also aims to call on all sectors of society to work together to solve this social problem of doctor-patient conflict. Monday Mornings not only involves the current doctor-patient issues, but also shows the controversy over medical ethics among medical staff. Compared with the doctor-patient conflict, there are more conflict talks between doctors about saving or not saving. Up to now, scholars at home and abroad have made some achievements in the study of conflict talk. Most of them focus on the utterance between husband and wife, parents and children, mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, and also there are few studies on doctor-patient conflict talk, but this kind of research only involves the relationship between doctor and patient, ignoring other interpersonal relationships such as doctor-doctor and doctor-nurse. Therefore, this research takes the American TV series Monday Mornings as the research object, and tries to analyze the conflict talk   among people in verbal communication in the context of medical treatment.
